Restaurant Guest Demand and Forecasting Application

Project Overview
In this project, the product team was tasked with creating a solution that would provide restaurant managers real time data to help them make staffing decisions during a shift based on guest demand and forecasted volumes.
My Contributions
My role on this project team was Lead UX/UI Designer. I was involved throughout the entirety of the product dev cycle.
Process Overview
  • Collaborated with product owner to define requirements.
  • Defined problem statement, design strategy and timeline.
  • Led the effort to user test internal and external users of existing dashboard.
  • Created sketches, wireframes and high fidelity prototypes.
  • Presented designs to stakeholders, gathered feedback and suggestions.
  • Finalized designs.
  • Created design documentation.
  • Collaborated with development team to implement design.
Process
Our process is based on the Double Diamond Theory and Lean UX principles. This process is incorporated in all of our design and development projects. I collaborated with the Product Owner to guarantee that feature was correctly prioritize and that we understood the problem we are trying to solve with the new design.
Problem Statement
It is critical to make sure everyone involved in the process is aware of the problem we are trying to solve. Its almost impossible to identify a successful project without first defining what issues actually exist and what the end user needs.

Restaurant Managers work in a fast paced environment that requires them to make decisions on the fly. They need a tool that gives them actionable real-time data to help them determine staffing needs and business forecasts. Currently the user is forced to manually make calculations to determine staffing needs. This is a problem because it often forces the manager to leave the floor, sometimes during peak business hours.
User Interviews
In order to get direct feedback from the end user and hear their pain points firsthand, I conducted a series of remote user interviews with Regional Managers and User Administrators partners.

The focus of the research was to validate the problem statement, better understanding the users ideal workflow and gathering feedback for additional features.
Gathering Insights
After conducting user interviews and receiving feedback, I was able to use the data to create a user persona and empathy map to represent the main user role for this project.
Prototyping
During this phase of the design process, I created high fidelity mockups in Figma using components from our design system. I reviewed proposed designs and design iterations with the UX Design Team during our weekly design review and critique.
Usability Testing
I conducted a round of usability test with internal and external users of the application via in person and remote interviews. These interviews required users to complete a series tasks that would help determine how intuitive and user friendly the new design would be. The data gathered from these tests was used to validate my design decisions and make sure that the new proposed designs solved the problems our user were facing,
Documentation
Once designers were finalized and signed off on, I shifted my focus to create design documentation that would ensure that the hand-off from design to development was seamless. The design documentation clarifies the problem statement, contains user research artifacts and clearly outlines each component used in the design, also where to find live code examples of the component in practice. I believe building shared understanding with the development team and to clearly document your design decisions is crucial in this process.
